Heartbreak at it's very best.

10:52 PM

When I'd planned on a comeback posting schedule with my previous post, this was not where I'd decided to start. But some things are best done unplanned, and this seemed one of them. [Don't ask me about the others ;)]

It all started a day before, I guess, when I read an article on the Bomaby Times front page, by, errrr... Saif Ali Khan. It was about a childhood friend, who happened to be a cute girl. The kids never saw each other because Saif's parents shifted base and the poor boy had just a photograph of his friend as a memory...

Brought back memories of my childhood. Lotsa friends in the town that I was born and the next one, where I grew up, whose names I don't really remember and faces i faintly do. But I'd surely love to give it a try to go see them after like, 20 odd years...

Anyways, back to today, when I was watching Neil Patrick Harris, the How I Met Your Mother star [well for me he's a real life guru, that all senti guys should have] , on Star World, when this advertisement for Airtel Digital TV went on air.

Hmmm... Saif Ali Khan's article, it turned out was a gimmick (which I had kinda guessed) for this very add. But that's where it becomes rather touchy. He somehow finds the girl thanks to the photograph, a locket, and Airtel Digital TV and serendipity of course. But, just when he's about to rush to the girl (who apparently anticipates something exciting too, given the look on Saif's face), Kareena Kapoor enters the frame. (yes, from nowhere!) Poor loyal [?] lover boy Saif quietly slips the photograph of his childhood sweetheart into his back pocket and moves towards Kareena... while the girl he had been searching for so long, too curbs her excitement and moves away... the whole scene ends with the background jingle... Dil Titli... Dil Titli Sa. (The heart's a butterfly) [the translation because I believe my blog does have some readership abroad! lol]

I don't really want to comment more on the advertisement. How I felt about it? Well, I haven't really written about an advertisement here on THE iNFINITY, so you can probably guess. Watching it I felt that I won't like to go through it all ever, although deep inside I know I make similar choices everyday, thanks to my heart that flutters like a butterfly, all the time.

Though there's one thing about he advertisement I can't stop myself from saying. Kareena Kapoor in the role of her life, as the evil vamp! She should do more such roles... looks good in those. [She still remains one my favourite on screen actresses for her role in Jab We Met.]

This post was never meant to be and I still end up writing a truly boring autopsy for an advertisement... hmmm. Dil Titli... Dil Titli Sa.

Listening to: The title track from Dil Bole Hadippa. How does Titli Bole Hadipa sound like?

Dedicated to: The Titli that our hearts are.

P.S. The blog entry is in no way an endorsement of Airtel Digital TV. I could have used a generic name, but that would have spoilt the fun. I still watch TV through my good old cablewallah by the way...

Update: My post was quicker than even youtube. Anyways, found the video for this advert on youtube just now... check it out if you didn't already see on TV.

I guess I'm not done... just yet.

7:51 PM

and you thought I had hung up my boots after the century? No grudges in here for thinking such weird stuff, because these past few days, that's what I've been doing and thinking as well... weird.

Why I've not been posting anything on THE iNFINIY all this time? Well, a combination of lame and not so lame excuses - have been lazy, haven't been well, had to undergo a nightmare (they call it surgery in medical terms), have been speculating a lot, haven't been thinking that much, have allowed my jobless tag get to me, have been listening to lots of people instead of just hearing them...

In a nutshell, I've been screwing and letting life screw me...

And then I remembered I certainly had things to do... probably a lot better than what I've been doing. This ain't really something worth reading... just a reminder to all my readers that I'm still here... and gonna be back writing soon... I do believe its better than most things I do.

Don't think there are many regular readers left on THE iNFINITY. But, asd's willing to do whatever it takes to get them back...

No bangs, but yes, I'm back! :D
[Silly punchline to end with, I know, but you know, I'm outta form]

Listening to: Ye Dooriyan, Kaminey. Courtesy: Radio Mirchi

Dedicated to: The hapless radio jockey on the same station. Man! I'm a fan of their stamina and shameless stupidity.

P.S. The preview pic that I put up was t attract more readers... nothing to do with a movie review as you must have realised by now. Ya kamina... dazz me!

The Best Goodbye Ever

5:27 PM
Its been review season of late, in and around iNFINITY. Me reviewing the OST for a Bollywood movie, my blog being reviewed and yet again, I'm reviewing something. It is a movie this time and no prizes for guessing, going by my choice of movies, that the movie happens to be Dasvidaniya.

RATING: ***/*****

Genre: Comedy [?]
Director: Shashant Shah
Producer: Azam Khan, Vinay Pathak
Banner: One More Thought Entertainment, Lemontea Productions
Music Director: Kailash Kher, Paresh-Naresh
Lyricist: Kailash Kher
Star Cast: Vinay Pathak, Neha Dhupia, Ranvir Shorey, Rajat Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla, Suresh Menon, Gaurav Gera, Purvi Joshi, Dina, Kunal Kumar, Sachin Khurana, Suchitra Pillai, Sarita Joshi, Kiku Sharda, Joy Fernandes, Brijendra Kala, Chandan Bisht

I had been busy searching for the exact meaning of the word since the time I had first heard of the movie. My own interpretation though was something related to the number ten. But ten what? Ten enemies? Ten responsibilities? Ten dreams? Ten ... There! Kudos to the publicity and production team, the way they made me (and quite a few other people, I believe) think, solves a lot of problems that low budget movies have to deal with (read handy, innovative publicity). The other being music of course, which I had pointed out in my earlier post, is fabulous.

The movie's cast (you can't call it star cast by bollywood standards) - Vinay Pathak (of Bheja Fry Fame, who happens to be the producer too, this time around), Ranvir Shourey (the erstwhhile channel V VJ, in a rather small cameo) Neha Dhupia (a cute little cameo again, for the former Miss India), Saurabh Shukla (as the Boss who was 'bossed'), Rajat Kapoor (as the ever repentant childhood friend), Gaurav Gera (as the family black sheep) and others, make for easily ignorable components, but you do so at your own risk.

Amar Kaul, lives a rather mundane and irksome life, as every mother's dream son. That is, until he is told about his fatal illness by his doctor and given a three months time frame to live. So, after the usual 'are you sure?' routines, he sets on, accepting the reality, and making a list of the TEN things he would like to do, before he is to say goodbye to life. And thus starts his pursuit of 'The Best Goodbye Ever'.

Every character, makes the most of his on screen presence, and more importantly you don't feel watching a bollywood flick at any time, a rather subtle trademark of Vinay Pathak starers. (again, if you could call them that).

Does the movie make you cry? Yes, at one point it does, but then, count on me to cry through Munnabhai anyday!

Nearest of the far parallels - you are reminded of Rajesh Khanna and Anand time and again. He had cancer too and tried to make most of whatever time he had left with life. But he was more of a people's man, the clown, and apparently hadn't been waiting for his doctor to tell him that he was going to be dead in time. And surely, his cancer (remember Lymphocercoma of the Intestine?) was of a fancier variety, that had the nation in a frenzy back then. But he was Rajesh Khanna - the superstar. Vinay Pathak, not quite in the same league as far as charisma goes, does manage to connect, in his own way though. And that is why I could watch the movie in one whole go. It isn't larger than life and every now and then, strikes a chord with you. I rate it 3 on 5.

My favourite scene from the movie? There isn't one, and if I were to recount all, you probably wouldn't have to watch it.

Dasvidaniya or das - vida - niya as the final scene would have us believe, is not just about Amar's list of ten things that he would like to accomplish before dying.

It actually means goodbye in Russian!

I have been reviewed

My favorite review described me as the cinematic equivalent of junk mail. I don't know what that means, but it sounds like a dig.

I woke up this morning to some really nice news. The reader count for iNFINITY is past 5000, a significant figure for the value of my efforts. It was nice to read the 'five - nought nought' thing as I checked out my blog for new shoutmix trails.

And then as I was busy dropping EC on some of the blogs that I visit regularly, I opened Nice2All authored by Lyndi, whom i had invited over for a review of my blog, THE iNFINITY, a few days back. And sure enough, there it was, the very day that iNFINITY's reader count touched 5000 readers. What a coincidence!

Its a really motivational piece, the review, which also made me realise that readers do look beyond content and subject matter in your blog, when they read it and Lyndi has offered quite a few suggestions as part of her constructive criticism, which I would like to work on once I am through with my current activities. you can read the review here.

But the best part of the review is the one where Lyndi quotes my Blogger profile and asserts that the dream is pretty close to reality now!

Once again, thank you so much for the review Lyndi.

Three cheers to Kailash Kher the composer

2:40 PM

RATING: **** / *****

Sixty odd blog posts and this is only my second music album review on the iNFINTIY. For the simple reason that I can't review what I don't listen to and I don't listen to what does not appeal to me. So, only the second album to be reviewed on iNFINITY had to be something special, and indeed it is.

Dasvidaniya - the music album released by Lemontea Productions as the OST of the movie which goes by the same name is something I am hooked on to ever since I caught hold of the songs. Composed by Kailash Kher, the music is a no frills attached, sheer listening pleasure for all of us bored with the run of the mill stuff being dished out by bollywood movies to - make up time.

You seem to get mesmerised with Track 1 itself. Titled 'Alvida' the lyricist takes his time to bring the listener to realise that it is not exactly a sad farewell that the character wishes to have, but all he wants to do is, go out on a high. And the way the score suddenly changes from a melodramatic piece to new age rock, makes you, well, sit up in awe.

Track 2 - funnily titled 'Mumma' is a touching piece, with Kailash Kher at his vintage best. You even see glimpses of his all time best 'Allah Ke Bande' now and then, but for the now, lets not compare two tracks that shouldn't really be. A mother's day dedication piece for me!

Track 3 - 'Muskura' brings back Sonu Nigam with something substantial after a long time. Inspiring you to smile in the same vein as the title track from 'Kal Ho Na Ho' - his best piece till date for yours truly. Back to this song, the accordion - mouth organ combination takes you for a while to the good old days of black and white movies. And then the tempo, just builds up.

Track 4 - is an instrumental rendition of Muskura again. Nice listening when you are in mood for sweet nothings.

And Track 5 - which happens to be the last track is a remix of Track 1 - Alvida. I, don't really comment on remixes, though Kailash Kher knows better, he doesn't need instant coffee to sell his stuff.

All in all a good buy if you pride at calling your collection different. And I give the album 4 stars on a 5 point scale.

So until the next time a new piece appeals to me the same way, this is the musical me signing off.

Lessons from the victor...

12:59 AM
When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.
~Victor Frankl

Looks like I'm waking up a little late to this, but Barak Hussein Obama is the president elect of the United States of America. Most Americans celebrated his election. Nothing special about it according to me though, because when you are down in the dumps, even a slight indication of fore coming change seems to be for the better, and causes you to begin celebrating. And the Americans think they have been sent their messiah in Mr. Obama. As much as I would like to see their wishes come true, I don't quite see a big change in the American way of dominating with nothing substantial for the backing.

OK, he may call back his marines from Iraq, cut down on outsourcing, find out a way to turn around the sinking economy, but in the long run, he would remain the same Uncle Sam - an American president, with rigidity and selfishness written all over him. And so, my very enthusiastic and optimistic friends in back in India, who are all too excited over the colour of his skin, might just be in for some rude shocks. I wouldn't want to speculate, but the implications that I see, in my virtual crystal ball will start taking shape and affecting us pretty soon.

Still, the way they went about conducting elections in the world's oldest democracy was a lesson in itself, a diligently crafted piece of work, taking a leaf out of which would do the world's largest democracy no harm.
  • The American voter did have a leader in mind. At least they knew their future president would be one of the two, unlike India where the PM is decided well after the results and after frantic buying and selling by all the parties involved.
  • The American voter knew each leader's views on every possible bone of contention doing the round of world markets - so whether it was oil prices, troop call back from Iraq, Gay relationships, single motherhood, or anything that an American voter could be concerned about, their were history sheets, taken out for both the running candidates and their running mates, and the issue was raked up in the public debates as well.
  • The campaigning was a really civilized, where the two of them fought each other one on one, in public debates, again unlike India, where leaders address fragmented rallies, conjure local issues, play with people's emotions and ensure themselves handsome votes.
  • I forgot this one, or did not mention it as emphatically as I should have, but the fact that there are just two parties in the USA helps a lot. You know one will win, you know both are different for their very ideals, and you can choose one and continue to support them for they stand for, yes again, unlike India where the 900 odd political parties don't have a stand of their own and policies are dictated and changed each day, by directive of the currently dominant member of a 40 odd party coalition.
  • And finally we as citizens of a so called glorious democratic nation need to rise up past petty local and rather personal issue, and vote with a social and common good in mind for the country to progress.
Errr... Sorry, but whom do I address this to if I want to see my country change the way it goes about conducting its elections?

Reviewing err... Seducing Mr. Perfect

11:27 PM

When it comes to living, we like to live fairytales and when that doesn’t happen, hmm... we make up our own fairy tales and live them to our heart’s joy. Yes, that is what all Bollywood movies are about and most Hollywood movies too. So, what is so special about this movie that I review? If you had to classify it on the basis of above two origins of production it came from none, rather, it came from farther east.
Produced under the banner of Sidus FNH entertainment and content company, Seducing Mr. Perfect is a Korean movie set, just about the same place. No, I don’t know Korean, and maybe nor does the hero (Thank God, at least he spoke English). And yes, watching the movie with English subtitles to read was a big torture). And yet, I review this movie for weird reasons I mention later in this post.
On to the movie... The hero is a perfect guy, one any girl would want for her, but not the leading lady. She thinks he’s arrogant, high-headed, and decides to beat him at his own game. So, we have a Harvard graduate business student teaching her assistant, the finer nuances of the game called love, both thinking of ways to outdo each other, while seeking each other’s help for the same. What follows is a series of meetings and accidents which of course lead to... no. It’s just a review; I don’t want to spoil your fun if you do happen to watch the movie i.e. if you do get it somehow, because I don’t believe a google search would help. There are some things that I found bizarre though, the guy who is a well educated fellah fell in love with the lady at the very first sight, so why the hell did he have to manipulate her around, teach her the rules of the game as he saw them, only to tell her finally that she could have had anybody. Maybe, that’s what makes the whole script work though, but if it’s for someone like me who has been fed on a diet of cushy English romantic comedies off late, sorry it doesn’t come off. Too late Mr. Robinson, should have thought of something new.
The movie does have some moments when you do connect with characters... maybe the language barrier comes in the way. There’s humour thrown in as well, but again by the time you realise you could have laughed your heart out over what just happened, its scene two. But one thing that I did realise and realise pretty well was, love, feelings, values, heartbreaks, confusions and emotions know no barriers of language or region and they give filmmakers and scriptwriters all across the world good subjects to make movies on. All in all, a nice movie to if you are bored of understanding whatever the character says and lip reading is something you are trying to learn from a long time. On a serious note: There’s a message for someone who is ready to learn from what the movie has to offer.
So, why I review a foreign language (read not even English) movie in my blog? Because, some time back, the thing became really popular in my college with copies being circulated all over the Local Area Network and people recommending it as a must watch to one another. In fact, I’ve been recommended it as one for quite some time now, so when I finally took time off to watch it, I decided I had to review it as well. So, here goes my take on the lady’s efforts to seduce her Mr. Perfect.
A review to the review suggests I have been, not to generous to the movie as some of my friends would expect me to be and so am expecting some innovative comments. Keep watching this space.

Yups.. Aamir Khan's blog gets read more than mine, and what's more, even the media seems to be biased. Featuring it every other day. So I decided to check it out for myself... what exactly makes it as popular as it is... It ain't bad... good in fact! But the main reason it gets read is because of the fact that it is Aamir Khan's official blog. Foul breath (yack!) right out of the horse's mouth. Read the complete review here.
And feel free to compare my blog with the horse's (i mean hero's ) blog!
